Yoga
In our classes, Yoga attempts to balance the mind and body using gentle
exercises or postures, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga is an
ancient system of mental and physical disciplines that originated in India,
but is now practiced all over the world, and in many different branches
or forms. Our classes teach poise, balance and strength and aim to improve
the body's physical health and to clear the mind.
What is the class like?
The class consists of gentle exercises or postures, some of which are
which are performed standing and some on the floor. If you are unable
to lie on the floor the instructor will adapt the postures for you to
do them standing or sitting on a chair.
The class starts with gentle stretching and breathing. After that, the
instructor will lead you through a series of movements, and between the
exercises you will be encouraged to relax and then prepare for the next
one.
Towards the end there is a relaxation session which lasts around 10 or
15 minutes and is an important part of the class as it allows you to “take
time out” to clear your mind.
The class lasts an hour.
What should I bring to class and what should I wear?
You should wear comfortable clothes, and, as much of the class
is normally floor-based, we suggest that ladies don’t wear skirts.
Track suit bottoms or loose trousers and a tee shirt are ideal. Yoga is
normally practiced barefoot, but you may want to put socks on for the
relaxation at the end of the class.
You will need to bring an exercise mat or thick towel to lie on, and
we suggest that you may also like to bring a cushion. For the relaxation
at the end of the class you are welcome to bring a blanket, or just another
layer to put on as you may find that you get cold.
