Tai Chi

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of exercise, in which you learn to perform a series of movements at a slow, smooth pace. Some of Tai Chi's movements are well known to Westerners as the slow motion routines that groups of people practice together every morning in parks around the world, particularly in China.

What is the class like?
The first part of the class always starts with a warm-up routine, which combines dynamic and static movements and controlled breathing exercises, together with gentle stretching. The second part of the class includes individual and group tuition in Tai Chi form. The classes last an hour.

Tai Chi can be practised by people of any age and any level of fitness, and all the movements are performed standing. It can help relieve the physical and mental effects of stress by focusing the mind on the movements being performed. It is effective in re-training posture and can improve balance and co-ordination. Muscles are strengthened and stretched, and it helps maintain flexibility in the joints. Many people say that doing Tai Chi regularly contributes to their general sense of health and wellbeing.

For those who want to know the type of Tai Chi that we follow, in our classes you will be learning the Wudang style. For our level of class it is possible to move between styles without too much difficulty, so please do not be put off if we offer a different style to Tai Chi that you may have done before.

What should I bring to class and what should I wear?
You do not need to bring anything with you, and you do not have to wear special clothes. However, we recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing, preferably made from natural materials, and you can either wear flat soled shoes or do the class barefoot.
