Cook & Eat and Breakfast Clubs
RHL obtained funding from the Local Network Fund to deliver Cook & Eat courses to six schools within the borough during 2007/08.
Learning to cook is a key skill, which promotes the understanding of food choice and helps children and adults to make sure they have a healthy diet. Cook and eat courses have many social and educational benefits. In addition to helping to change the diets of people and their families, they assist in reducing social isolation and in building self-confidence.
Hampshire School Catering developed this programmed in partnership with Local District Councils and Primary Care Trusts with the aim of using more local produce, reducing obesity in children and promoting the health and wellbeing of school children within Hampshire using school meal recipes.
The programme consists of six weekly sessions for children and their parents. Each session lasts for one and a half hours and parents and children learn:
•Practical cooking skills
•Healthy eating tips
•Food hygiene and safety
•How to budget and reduce food bills
•How to create menus for the family.
Breakfast Clubs

Four successful Breakfast Clubs are up and running in Farnborough and Aldershot. Breakfast Clubs can play a significant role in helping to improve children’s attendance and motivation, and in increasing social inclusion. They also provide an important opportunity to promote healthy eating amongst children.
