Health Trainers

Are you ready for change?
"Health Trainers" are a new service available in your local area.

What is a Health Trainer?
• You may want to give up smoking, get fit, improve your health or just get advice on healthy eating but don’t know where to start – that’s where Health Trainers can help
• We are trained by the NHS to help people to make healthy lifestyle changes
• We are FREE of charge
• We can meet locally in a venue near you
• We can offer up to 6 sessions of one to one support.
• We work confidentially
• We don’t judge
• We can provide you with information and point you in the right direction
• If you want some help to get started we can come along to a class with you
• We can help you when you feel the changes you are making are too difficult

What a Health Trainer is not
• We are not counsellors, but we can help you find qualified counsellors in your community
• We are not personal trainers
• We are not nutritionists or dieticians; your GP is the best person to ask about this
• We are not medically trained; we cannot give advice on medical conditions. But we can help you to make changes that your GP has recommended
• We will not get you running around the park or doing circuits but, if you do want to do those things we can help you find the best place to do it
• We are not here to judge you or insist that you have to change, the choice is yours - if you decide that the time is right for you to make some lifestyle changes then the Health Trainers are the people to support you in that choice

Information for GPs
• We are trained by the NHS to help people to make healthy lifestyle changes.
• We are accredited with a City and Guilds level 3 qualification
• The Health Trainer role evolved from the 2004 Department of Health White Paper “Choosing Health: Making healthy choices easier”
• We support the vascular inequalities programme.

Problem
Sarah had been putting on a few pounds and she wanted to lose weight. She read about Health Trainers in the local library, gave them a call and arranged to meet up.

What happened
Sarah told the health trainer what she did day to day, what she enjoyed doing, what she was eating, why it was difficult to go on a diet and so on. Sarah felt that the Health Trainer was someone who really understood the problems she faced; she kept a diary showing what she did and what she ate and showed it to the Health Trainer next time they got together.

Sarah was skipping breakfast and lunch; she had a large meal in the evening and kept snacking at night; she felt there just wasn’t time to eat properly earlier in the day because she was working extra hours to make ends meet - top of her ‘to do’ list was a large and unexpected electricity bill which had to be paid!

It was good to talk things through with someone she could trust. Sarah decided on a new food plan which was specially designed to help her lose weight and keep up energy levels to meet her busy schedule.

The Health Trainer also put Sarah in contact with an energy advisor who was able to advise her how to manage the payment of the outstanding electricity bill, save energy and generally get back on track.

Today
Sarah is losing between 1 and 2 lbs most weeks and feels generally fitter and stronger. She eats a healthy diet each day with more energy and feels less stressed. She has also managed to pay off that big electricity bill.
